Martijn Hoes

Assistant Professor

Martijn Hoes is Assistant Professor in the Departments of Clinical Genetics (MUMC+), Cardiology (UM), and Genetics and Cell Biology (UM). He completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Maastricht University. Subsequently, he moved to Groningen (NL) for a PhD at the University Medical Centre Groningen under the supervision of Peter van der Meer. In his graduate work, he developed several in vitro models for cardiac diseases based on human cardiomyocytes derived from (induced) pluripotent stem cells around the central topic of peripartum cardiomyopathy. He stayed in the same lab to study the effects or pregnancy on the heart in more detail. Finally, he moved back to Maastricht to work at the intersections of genetics and (pregnancy-related) heart disease in 2022.

Martijn’s main research focus is on understanding the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on the cardiovascular system and as a possible trigger for pregnancy-related heart diseases. As part of an interdisciplinary team, he aims to further develop in vitro models based on tissue engineering to further study the interaction between genetic predisposition and certain aspects of pregnancy in the heart. These models will support translational research with a strong clinical relevance.

In 2021, Martijn was granted a Postdoc Dekker Grant from the Dutch Heart Foundation that allows him to study peripartum cardiomyopathy in more detail by using engineered cardiac tissues in collaboration with the group of Peter van der Meer at the UMCG.
