Thijs van Herpt

Post doc

Dr Thijs van Herpt pursued his medical studies at Maastricht University, followed by his internal medicine training at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam under the guidance of Professor J.L.C.M. van Saase and Professor S.C.E. Klein Nagelvoort-Schuit. During his residency, he conducted research on type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease in both the Diagene study in Eindhoven and the Rotterdam Study in Rotterdam, supervised by Prof.. E.J.G. Sijbrands and Prof.  O.H. Franco. Upon completing his specialization as an internist in 2019, he fulfilled an intensive care fellowship under the supervision of Dr D.C.J.J. Bergmans. He successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled "Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Metabolic Syndrome: Modulators and Prognosis." As of January 2022, Dr Thijs van Herpt has joined the staff of the Intensive Care department at Maastricht UMC+. As an internist-intensivist, he will continue his career conducting research, focusing on both cardiovascular and metabolic monitoring and the interplay with pharmacology and toxicology in critical ill patients. Thijs aims to implement research observations within the care team involving nurses, to benefit cardiovascular critical care.
